The 411 on Pheelz – Pheelz Good.
2022 saw the resurgence of the ‘producer turned artiste’ phenomenon in the African music scene. Nigerian producer Pheelz, who had until his hit song ‘Finesse,’ produced for stalwarts in the Nigerian music industry like Tiwa Savage, Olamide, Teni and many others, got his big break in the early months of 2022. Within a short space of time after officially releasing the single to a snippet that had gone viral on social media, he was performing on the O2 Arena and Apollo Theater stages. This was evidence of his readiness to take the mantle when the opportunity presented itself.
On Friday 10th February, 2023, he shared his second body of work, an EP called ‘Pheelz Good.’ We are going to provide a track-by-track run through of the project to see if it lives up to expectations.
On the intro ‘Ballin,’ Pheelz appears to be reflective of the journey since he put out his first song in 2015. I mean, it’s quite expected for him to take a minute and take it all in considering what seems to be like a sudden rise to fame. But then again, what is a reflective song without few words for the haters? The producer turned singer really came swinging for those on that spectrum.
Track 2 has a rather mellow tone compared to the previous one. On ‘Stand By You’ he sings about a love interest by defending what they both share. It’s apparent there is some resistance to the relationship so there’s the need for some reassuring words. The succinct female voice also does well to carry the desired emotive feel.
Track 3 has all the qualities of a standout song. This might be a fan favorite on the entire project. You can never go wrong with the five-pattern rhythm on an Afrobeats song, which is quite reminiscent of the Azonto genre. The song is lyrically packed, but rhythmic and melodic enough to get you grooving. A 10/10 track by all standards.
Moving on to track 4, we have the official second single off the project. This one is called ‘Electricity’ and it features Afrobeats superstar Davido. An interesting fact about this song is the fact that it was recorded in 2021 and until ‘Finesse’ went viral, was supposed to be the lead single. Both artistes brought their A-game and they delivered some very colorful visuals to go along with it.
It’s unclear if it was intentional to have such a fire two-track run with track 4 and 5. Right after ‘Electricity’ comes the infamous ‘Finesse’ featuring BNXN (fka Buju). This was one of the first songs that popularized the ‘choral-type’ hooks and broke all the stereotypes as to how a hit is engineered.
Track 6 references and is named after popular Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. It is a fitting title for a song that makes a lot of street allusions.
Next up is ‘Emi Laye Mi.’ An upbeat song that sounds like it’s few moments away from starting a ‘trenches’ dance challenge.
On the final song ‘Ewele,’ it’s quite visible Pheelz still has some few words for the haters. This time around he cane fir jot only them but the naysayers, fake friends and detractors as well; capping the entire project beautifully.
Ever since the EP’s release, it has reached number on Nigeria, Malawi and Sierra Leone’s Apple Music Charts, while charting in 20 other countries. This is resounding evidence that the producer turned singer is actually legit. Pheelz is definitely here for the long run.
