6 Ghanaian acts to watch out for in 2022.
2021 was a very good year for Ghanaian acts acts their music, considering the milestones chalked up. For the first time in history, a Ghanaian artiste in the person of rapper, singer and producer, E.L was able to attain 20 million plus streams on Spotify for a single release, and since then, artistes like Kidi and Amaarae have followed suit. That same year also saw the break out of very fresh and young talents unto the scene who are on a steady rise to international stardom. We are going to take a look at 6 of them we can watch out to take the global stage in 2022.
1. Black Sherif.
Who doesn’t know Kweku Frimpong? At a point in 2021, we all felt we were related to Aunty Meri, haha. After dropping two viral freestyles (first sermon and second sermon) intended to announce his E.P initially, he merited co-signs from some of Ghana’s top artistes and an official remix with Grammy award winning Afrobeats star Burna Boy. Since then, he has been on almost every big stage and platform, putting an extra lens on the amazing discography he was building with songs like “Money” and “Destiny,” while racking up almost 16million YouTube views for his videos. Towards the end of 2021, Burna Boy announced that he’ll be going on tour with him, kicking it off by bringing him out during his Lagos show on the 27th of December, 2021. He recently got billed to perform at the Hype Festival in Germany, alongside Wizkid and Tyga in August 2022.With the rapper turning 20 years old on January 9th , the world is his to conquer and we look forward to a full-length project from him in 2022. 2. Gyakie.
The amazing singer had a breakout year in 2021 with her single “Forever” off her 5 track EP titled “Seed” released in 2020. This did huge numbers on video and picture sharing sites, Tiktok and Instagram, as well as topping charts on mainstream radio in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and the Billboard Thriller charts. It eventually led to a remix of the single with Nigerian singer and producer Omah Lay, getting her over 47million views on all her YouTube videos. She has gone on to appear on songs with artistes such as R2Bees, Bisa K’dei and Blaq Jerzee. Though she comes from Ghanaian music royalty as she is the daughter of legendary Ghanaian highlife musician Nana Acheampong, there’s no denying her talent and hardwork which has earned her the moniker, “Songbird.” She recently teased a new EP set to drop in 2022 which in her own words is going to, “take over the world!” You can in the meantime listen to her already amazing discography on Spotify via the link below.
3. BRYAN THE MENSAH.
Who is able to announce a debut album 5 years ahead and deliver perfectly? That man is BRYAN THE MENSAH. As young as he was in 2016, this guy put out a tweet mentioning the title of his debut album and release date, and in the meantime, worked towards building a cult following and having a number of classic EPs to his name. Coming off the release of his first studio album in November 2021, “Road To Hastafari,” BRYAN is on his way to score a radio hit with one of the singles, “Until I see you”, which features singer TiTi Owusu. The young rapper has been able to get co-signs from rappers such as Sarkodie, E.L, M.anifest and A-Q. 2022 promises to be a good year for the rapper, singer and producer, and we are in the spectator stands cheering him on. 4. Camidoh.
Real name Raphael Camidoh Kofi Attachie, the Ghanaian Afropop/R&B singer, songwriter, rapper, and record producer broke out unto the scene in 2019 following the release of his 2018 single, “For my lover.” Since then, he’s been on a steady rise, performing on stages like “Ghana Party in the Park” in London, UK. Getting to the end of 2021, he released the single “Sugarcane” featuring Nigerian producer Phantombeatz, as a single off his upcoming debut album “LITA.” The single has gone on to make almost 200 million views on Tiktok, and is on its way to be the singer’s second radio hit. 5. Moliy.
The Ghanaian-American singer and songwriter had a breakout year in 2021 as well, by appearing alongside American singer-songwriter Kali Uchis on Amaarae’s “SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY”. The song rose to as high as no. 33 on the Billboard charts, charting in 80 different countries on apple music, and racking up 115 million spotify plays and counting. All this came following the success she had with her Afro-Fusion influenced EP “Wondergirl,” which gained airplay in Nigeria, Kenya, and The Gambia. In the last month of 2021 she had an intimate gig in Accra to give fans a taste of her live performance prowess. 2022 promises to be a year of more music and breaking barriers for Moliy. 6. Kwaku DMC.
A popular fan favorite among the “Asakaa Boys” collective, Kwaku DMC has developed himself to be regarded as one of the best lyricists in the country. “King Kong Nyame” as he’s often referred to, has delivered quotable verses on some Asakaa hit songs like “Ma Drip,” “Condemn,” “Y3 Y3 Dom” and the Smallgod and Headie One assisted “Sinner.” In 2021, he dropped the third installment to his “Road to Traphouse” project to critical acclaim.
