Y’akoto Releases a Brand New Track, ‘Secret’ featuring Jay Bahd.
Ghana based artist Y’akoto [Yah-Ko-Tow] has just released her sultry new single ‘Secret,’ and for the singer-songwriter and creative, it heralds a new dawn for her musical guise.
Y’akoto’s music is rich, vibrant and true – a heady mix of spirituality and sensuality that combines the sublime warmth of Afrobeats and other forms of west African pop music with the shimmering edge of modern dance music and contemporary R&B.
All of this shines through on new single ‘Secret’, a track featuring Ghanaian Drill/Afro-Beat star Jay Bahd of the Asakaa Boys.
The stunning new cut was recorded as part of a host of very productive recording sessions in Los Angeles with Grammy-nominated producer Nabeyin, who has previously worked with Kanye West, Drake, Nas and Miguel among many others. ‘Secret’ was also mixed and mastered by multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated engineer IRKO, whose credits include: Kanye West, Jay Z, The Weeknd, Sia and Jennifer Lopez.
About ‘Secret’, Y’akoto said; “I guess we’ve all been lied to when it comes to love and relationships. It’s beautiful but it’s also fucking hard. Romantic love is an enigma and a notion that you have to be completely selfless and unconditionally in love from dusk till dawn. That is a scam in my eyes. Love feels reckless and dark sometimes but we kind of like the thrill. That’s why we do it over and over again. We choose people consciously. They don’t just fall from the sky. It’s unpopular but I love myself more than my lovers. Once you burst that bubble life becomes euphoric, things start moving, planets start shifting and you can finally be together.”
Having spent much of her life between Germany, France and Ghana, Y’akoto recently relocated permanently to the Ghanaian capital of Accra, which also happens to be her father’s birthplace. With music running through her blood (her father was a successful Ghanaian recording artist in the 70’s) and with influences ranging from the R&B majesty of Destiny’s Child & SZA, to the raw energy of Jimi Hendrix and the dulcet tones of Tracey Chapman, it’s easy to see why Y’akoto’s music has such an eclectic sonic palate.
‘Secret’ is the beginning of a new chapter in what has been an incredible journey so far. With a forthcoming suite of sleek, futuristic new Afrobeat recordings from those LA sessions, Y’akoto looks at the tensions in romantic relationships, the alienation and power of immigrant children, and the bold, inherent strength of women the world over – finding a niche that’s both hypnotic and deeply romantic, brimming with wisdom and wit.
