TOP BOY: SPINALL’s MULTIVERSE OF SOUNDS AND ARTISTRY.
Step into the world of electrifying beats, captivating rhythms, and soulful melodies as we dive into the latest album by one of Nigeria’s most prominent disc jockeys and record producers, SPINALL. With a career spanning over a decade, SPINALL has garnered critical acclaim for his ability to seamlessly blend various genres of music, creating a unique and unforgettable sound. In his latest album, ‘Top Boy,’ the talented record producer delivers a fusion of Afrobeats, Amapiano, Dancehall, and Hip-hop, taking us on a musical journey that’s both exhilarating and introspective. Get ready to experience SPINALL’s Multiverse of sounds and artistry as we explore every track of this highly anticipated album.
The album kicks off with ‘Cruise’ featuring Azanti and Zaiam. Azanti has been one of the most exciting artistes out of 2022, so it comes as no surprise that he’s on here. The bass line in this song is everything to die for, giving a feeling that actually embodies the title of the song. The psychedelic feel giving to the mix of the vocals feeds into the same purpose. A perfect way to kick off a project of its nature.
Track 2 is called ‘Everday,’ which features Minz, another artiste who’s had an incredible run with his own single ‘Wo Wo.’ Track 2 seems to be a notch higher in tempo compared to track 1. It’s unapparent if it’s intentional to progress the groove as the album goes on. That sax number also added a lush touch to the entire song.
Next up is ‘Give Me Love’ featuring Niniola. On this song we have the Nigerian singer in her ‘Afro-house’ forte, belting vocals to implore her love interest to show her all the love she needs. Niniola never goes wrong when she’s in her ‘Afro-house’ bag, which is something that’s obviously not lost on SPINALL.
‘Cloud 9’ features Adekunle Gold. Sweet, sweet song. The vocal sample that appears intermittently in the chorus did justice to the song. The bass line came out to play again, along with the trailing shaker and lead sound. This provided AG baby with the right canvas to splash his paint on, figuratively.
Track 5 is ‘Oshey,’ which has the ideal pair of BNXN and Stefflon Don. I must say, that, BNXN would have given Captain Hook a run for his money if he had also been on the Jolly Roger. The hooks and choruses are laid effortlessly by him at this point, jeez! It also appears Stefflon Don has successfully been naturalized as a Nigerian with how she’s singing Yoruba slang with ease.
It’s good to see Reekado Banks back outside. He appears alongside Phyno and Ntosh Gazi on ‘Top Mama.’ Majority of the time I have no idea what Ntosh Gazi is saying but it’s enough to get me gingered to ‘detty’ myself on the dancefloor. I guess after all every ‘Top Boy’ deserves a ‘Top Mama’ right?
Things appear to simmer down a bit on Track 7 ‘Honest,’ which features Tay Iwar, Tamera and TSB. Here is another display of Tay Iwar’s excellent pen game represented by soul-piercing lyrics and smooth vocals. Honorable mention to Tamera as well, she killed it.
Track 8 is the infamous ‘Palazzo’ featuring Asake. I mean what is there to say about this monster hit? It literally had everyone in a chokehold middle of last year when it dropped, earning SPINALL his first entry into the Billboard U.S Afrobeats Songs chart and debuting at number 2 on Nigeria’s Turntable Charts.
Now SPINALL and Amaarae? That’s a very unlikely combo. But here’s the thing about DJ-produced albums, they’re notorious for making unlikely match-ups and features, and this is a classical example. Amaarae’s signature style never gets lost no matter the circumstances.
Track 10 is also another unlikely match-up. I’m sure everyone looking forward to a Ladipoe and Blxckie song would have been expecting a Hiphop sound but no, this wish came true on a vibey Afrobeats sound.
Track 11 features Jess, one-half of Nigerian-American R&B Duo VanJess. ‘Just To Be’ connotes good vibes, a song that can be enjoyed heartily.
‘Bunda,’ which happens to be track 12 features Kemuel and Olamide. This song is definitely going to be one of the fan favorites, since it possesses all the characteristics of a smash hit.
Next up is ‘Sere (Remix)’ featuring Fireboy DML and 6lack. At this point, it’s important to notice that all the OG YBNL artistes have been featured on this project. This song in particular has a tropical vibe to it. Imagine laying on a beach somewhere with a cocktail in hand and you hear this wafting through the speakers? Pure bliss!
The penultimate and final songs are the original and remix versions of the same songs respectively. An anthemic song that has a star-studded lineup of Summer Walker, DJ Snake, Äyana and Nasty C.
In conclusion, SPINALL’s album is a masterclass in Afrobeats music production. From start to finish, it is a joyous celebration of the vibrant rhythms and infectious melodies that have made Nigerian music a global phenomenon. SPINALL’s skillful blending of traditional Afrobeats sounds with contemporary production techniques results in a sound that is both timeless and forward-thinking. The album features an array of talented African musicians, each contributing to a rich tapestry of sound that is a testament to the wealth of musical talent that Africa has to offer. Overall, DJ SPINALL’s album is a must-listen for anyone who loves African music, and a fantastic showcase of one of Nigeria’s most innovative DJs and record producers. It is sure to leave listeners feeling uplifted, inspired, and ready to hit the dancefloor.
