Grace Ladoja, The First African Woman to Design Her Own Pair of Nike Shoes

Every great product has an origin, a backstory that explains why it exists. Often, the more striking the design, the deeper the creator’s journey. The Homecoming Nike Air Max Plus designed by Grace Ladoja is no exception. It doesn’t just look different; it demands you understand the world that built it.
The sneaker is a piece of the life story of Grace Ladoja, the first African woman to design her own pair of Nike shoes. This isn’t just a shoe; it is her life story woven into a Nike staple.

Grace was born and raised in London, as the daughter to a notable former Governor of Oyo State. However, her true “homecoming” happened during a visit to Lagos following the passing of her mother. In that moment of grief and an attempt with her brother to reconnect with relatives, she found a profound, deeper connection with her motherland.
To give back to the city that embraced her, she founded Homecoming, a name suggested by her friend, “Decks.” The movement is a bridge merging art, music, fashion, and sports to foster a community where creatives from Lagos and the diaspora can spark the right conversations for change. Ladoja also founded Metallic Inc, a global creative agency and cultural platform that connects brands with emerging talent and has supported creatives through funding and cross-market collaborations.
The Homecoming Air Max Plus is the product of a girl who once saved her bus fare just to afford a pair of Nike. Having triumphed over anxiety and the shadows of a health battle with cancer, Grace channeled the legendary strength of African women into this product.
The design is a masterclass in cultural symbolism. How?
The Laces: The aesthetic, non-functional laces represent the traditional African sponge. Every African child remembers the “tough love” of a parent’s scrub after a day of playing in the dirt. It is used as a waterproof to prevent getting the shoe wet when you indulge in water puddles as a result of the constant flooding in Lagos.
The Palette: She adopted a vibrant sun-orange, a hue that remains a constant across every African country she has visited. These countries span from Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, Cote D’Ivoire, and South Africa. This colour is described as vibrant and magical.

The Cowries: Incorporated into the design, these symbolize both ancestral wealth and spirituality.
From the shared light of the African sun to the bustling streets of Lagos and the spiritual significance of the cowry, this shoe is a fusion connecting the continent with its brothers and sisters across the globe.

When you slip on a pair of Homecoming x Nike Air Max Plus, the “swag” feels different because you aren’t just wearing a brand. You are wearing a story of survival, heritage, and the bridge between two worlds.
